Putting your home appliances into Self Storage can be a daunting task. Big and heavy, you need to make sure you do not damage anything. Well, at North Shore Mini Storage, we have put together a list on how to store your appliances.
When you can’t keep your refrigerator or freezer at home, you have to store them. Unfortunately, it isn’t just a matter of hauling these large appliances into your unit. If you do, leftover moisture can breed mould, mildew, and even rust. At least one day before you’re planning on moving these items, unplug them. As you wait for any icy build-up to defrost, remove everything from their cabinets and clean the shelves and trays. A simple mixture of soap and water is enough to remove any stuck-on food. If your fridge has a built-in ice maker, locate the water holding tank and drain it. Disconnect the pipes that connect it with the water supply and let it air dry.
First, you’ll want to ensure your oven is spotless before you move it into your unit. By removing any caked-on messes, you can prevent mould and mildew from growing in your appliance. Check to see if your oven has a self-cleaning setting. This usually takes approximately an hour to complete, during which the oven reaches an incredibly high temperature to burn off any caked-on spills. Once it’s cool, wipe out any of the burnt residue.
This machine will need a bit of TLC. There can be food debris stuck in the blades that should be removed before it’s placed in storage. Using only water and baking soda, clean the gasket, blades, and interior of the appliance. Once you’re done, run the dishwasher with only vinegar to remove any lingering smells. When the cycle is over, turn off the water supply and disconnect it from the electrical supply, then drain your dishwasher. Only move it once it and its connecting tubes are completely dry.
